Family Search

This is along shot - thanks for your info Mr. Spock - on 1841 census my great great grandfather Alex Stewart, 15, agric. labourer was living in Drynic with a Kenneth McDonald, 20, agric. lab., a John Cameron, 14, agric. lab., and an Evan McGregor 15, agric. lab., and beside Evan's name is the numeral 1 which indicates the dwelling was occupied by the family members. I should go and look for other McGregors I guess - does anyone know through their research if these are their family members? Are there any Stewarts still in Dingwall? I see that there was a George Stewart 45, wife Christian 35 and Ann, 10, and Alexander, 5. who lived in Tulloch. He was also an agric. lab. Anyway, one never knows - enjoy your site - it is always interesting reading about the various things that are going on. My plans are to let a house in the area sometime and explore. June Macnab

Boer War

Good day from South Africa. I'm an amateur historian specialising in the siege and relief of Ladysmith during the Boer war. During many years of research I've accumulated thousands of names, in the main British dead, and have compiled a database listing this info. My list now extends to all known dead as opposed to the original Ladysmith portion. I have added a column to my database for monuments as I believe that a man giving his life for his country deserves to be remembered somewhere and to this end hope to establish a monument entry for all the dead.
I understand from the Imperial War Museum website that there is a memorial in Dingwall to the 90 men of the Seaforth Highlanders who died in the Boer War. Please would it be possible for someone to send me a list of these names or a photograph?
I am always prepared to search my database for anyone looking for their relative who died in the war.

Logan Family history

We are trying to find information on James Logan born 1828-1832 we believe in Dingwall, Scotland. His children were Cathrin, William George and May. He was a blacksmith who moved to Ashford, Kent working on the Chelsea railway. His son William George had 5 children, William James Alfred, Jack, Rose, Dorothy and Milly all born in Ashford. William James had one son John William while married to Joan Collins, BUT he had another child we didn't know about until now. We would love to re-connect with my father's half sibling and trace the family back as far as possible. We have reached a dead end. Any help? Thank you. Gary and Carley Logan.

Information about Ann Mackenzie

We are trying to find out more about Ann Mackenzie, born in Dingwall in 1855 to Angus and Isabella, and about her daughter, Elizabeth Reid, who may later have been known as Ella Mackenzie (born in 1880). Elizabeth came to lodge with her grandparents when she was only six months, and we are not sure where Ann went, or what later happened to Elizabeth/Ella, who was my husband's grandmother. I think that Ann had a number of siblings, including Margaret, William and Hector and it would be brilliant to find out more about the family. Fingers crossed!

Findon Main

Hello to you all in Dingwall.
I am looking for some advice on tracing some information on my family on my mothers side. My gran, Margaret Ritchie, was born in a croft in Findon Main in 1916. She moved down to Hook Norton in Oxfordshire around 1931. She was not very forthcoming on her past unfortunately.
The only details that we have are that they used to take the livestock to Banbury market and had a field in Yorkshire to overnight the animals. She passed away four years ago and any help or advice would be much appreciated.

This is a great website! In late August I'm bringing a small group to Scotland and we'll be in Dingwall for a day, and so I was just looking around for some information (been through it but not to it) and came across your guestbook. For Martin Wagner: a friend of mine in Florida is married to a Roderick Macdonald from Scotland so I've written to her to enquire about his ancestors. Maybe we'll have some luck. Isn't technology wonderful (sometimes) -- how we can be in touch with people so far away and how that can occasionally change a life. And to everyone who lives in Dingwall -- you're living my dream!

My Question:
I'm from Germany, the region of Paderborn. Long time ago i was with an Folk-Dancing Group, Volkstanzkreis Henglarn, in Dingwall. The was a big Youth-Event with Folkdancing. Our accommodation was in Tulloch Castle. We had a great time there (with the green lady)
So i made many friends the at this time. I'm sorry that i lost the contact to them.
There was also a Folk-dancing Group over to Germany. The Group was called: Ross-Shire-Folk.
Now (after about 20 Years) i tried to get some contact to an Member of the group. But the internet could'nt help me by the search.
All the Persons must be now about 35-45 years old.
Another Person was working in the Office at the Community-center. He was a kind of Youth-Officer?
Mayby it is possible, the you can send me an E-Mail-Adress from a member of the Ross-Shire-Folk Group. Then I can get in contact with them.
Mayby there is another person, who can tell me something about the group and the members
Thank's a lot

'TA Houses'

I have just come across this site.
I used to live in Dingwall and went to the Academy there. I remember my time in Dingwall fondly as I made a lot of good friends there as a boy.
My father was a major in the Seaforth Highlanders and we lived in the new TA Houses that were built at the end of Craig Road. The last time I passed through Dingwall the houses had gone and a garage stood on the spot. I remember my mother being quite upset when I told her this. Can anyone tell me why the houses were pulled down?
I would also be grateful to hear from anyone who might remember from my days in Dingwall

Bowling Club?

Can someone please let me know the location of the bowling green/club in Dingwall as I have searched online and in the phone book without success. It is mentioned in minutes of meetings on this site but is not listed under sports clubs and I could not see it on any of the maps.
Thanks.

Barbara and Donald Douglas

Is there anyone from Dingwall who is related to my Grandparents Donald and Barbara Douglas? My dad Alfred was their adopted only son. I believe Barbara had sisters called Margaret and Jessie. Donald had something to do with Ross County F.C. (a founder member?). I would love to hear from you if you are out there.

Moderator

Does anyone from Dingwall Community Council or Dingwall Initiative moderate this site? There are questions posted with no answers from the community bodies. Maybe the time has come for the website to host a moderator controlled forum/message board as well as a guest book. A guest book should be used for comments by guests but this one is used more as a forum, obviously this is something that the people in the area need. Any chance that it could be done??

Pefferside Park

Can anyone care to enlighten me as to what has happened to the play equipment in the Park? The part for older children has practically nothing left in it, and during the height of the summer the older kids had nothing to do there, even the boats are only out for a short time about 3 or 4 times a week. My kids are 7 & 10 and are too big to play in the toddlers park, so found the park has turned into something very boring. What a ridiculous state of affairs for a town with such a lovely park setting, to have hardly anything in it for locals and visitors. The toddlers park is lovely but when it is busy it is unfair on the wee ones to have older children charging about. Come on and lets get our kids a decent park BEFORE the winter. (rant over!!)

Gala Week

The new gala week looks really good, but why do we have to lose the old favourites? The kids and car treasure hunts and the popular window spotting competition? A Gala Week should be for the local people, we should not lose things we love!!

The Leaning Monument

I have a postcard with a picture of a leaning monument dated 1907. Could you please tell me if it is still standing as I have visited Dingwall a few times on holiday - I can't recall ever seeing it?
Many thanks Andrew Clarke.

Dingwall in the USA

My Dad's Father (Henry Dingwall) came to Minnesota from I believe Dingwall, Scotland, in the early 1900s. Most of our family is still in Minnesota, Portland, OR (me) Texas, Wisconsin, and Flordia. We have had a desire to visit Dingwall Scotland. Can you tell me when is the best time of the year to visit and where would the closest major city to fly into from the states? Would renting a car to drive to Dingwall be the best or are there other means that would be more convenient? I would appreciate any information you could provide me.

Greetings & Thanks

Hello Dingwall,
Greetings and thanks to the Town and its Folks for kindness, help and, superior friendliness. Met early 1990s on Family seeking out grave of late Brother we never knew. The surviving family were able to gather briefly,75 years on at the spot to remember him and our last youngest brother laid to rest in Croy previous day! As sons of Regt. 1st SH, we remembered the 4/5 SH as Dad was Sgt Instructor with them at time of loss!
Noted magnificent 'Memorial' of 4/5 and visited before we left, hoping to return again one day. Your Council's assistance is here acknowledged; they were the best!
Good fortune to you all, Caber Feidh!

What a great site!

My MacRae's lived at Kiltearn, Woodland, Swordale; Donald, Jessie, Alexander, Maggie, Jessie Lizzie, Helen all born 1880s - children of Kenneth & Kate MacRae. 1901 census has Donald as a shepherd and three of his sisters, Jessie Ann, Maggie and Helen working as domestic servants. Does anyone recognise these names? Donald's sister Mary MacRae was married to Henry Urquhart. Their sons were Kenneth, who lived at Fodderty, John and Henry. Does the place Rhiddorch HO, Kiltearn exist? All my best, Flora, - I have been to Dingwall and hope to be there this summer, lovely town.

Well done !

Just like to say a well done to all of those in the wow factor. I think they were all brilliant and its just the sort of thing we need in Dingwall; there should be more things like that here in our town. Once again, well done to all, Henry

Davidson/Dingwall Ancestry

My great great grandfather was Erasmus Davidson, a sea captain born circa 1785. He married (1812) Matilda Dingeall (born 1793) on Prince Edward Island, Canada. She was daughter of Alexander Bates Dingwell, born 1766 (rash crook BIRNIE) son of John Bates Dingwell born 1730 (CULLODEN). I believe both families came from the Dingwall area and the families could have known each other in Scotland .They may have emigrated together , but I think Erasmus learned his navigational trade in Scotland and already was a young man when he came here .Would there be any navigational records still in existence? Their son (my great grandfather) was also called Erasmus, which may have been a family name. Where could I find census or birth records for late 1700s?

Fraser Family - Dingwall

Hi
Am trying to trace my husband's family. His mother was Margaret Fraser Ferguson, born in 1947 in Dingwall. Her mother was Susan Ada Ferguson (nee Fraser) who had to put Margaret up for adoption when she was 9 months old. Susan Fraser had several brothers and sisters - Jeannie, Donald and a twin sister called Margaret. My mother-in-law's father was called Edward Ferguson. I believe there are still some Frasers in Dingwall but so far have had no luck. We do have one letter addressed from Cairmuir Cottage, Murthly, Perth. We just want to fill in the missing gaps and possibly see some family photos etc. If you are able to help I would be eternally grateful.
