McCrae search
My great Grandmother was Annie McCrae who was born c.1858 and married John Foils on 16.11.1883 aged 25 years in Glasgow where she was a domestic servant.

Annie and John had two children - Roderick George and John, named Foyls, who was born on 17 July 1886 at 52 Crawford Street Glasgow. His father John was present at the birth. Sadly baby John died eight months later of measles. He had been ill for nine days and had convulsions for eighteen hours before he died at home.

Annie died on 20 March 1889, the year after Roderick’s birth. He would never really know his mother. The cause of death was gastritis and nephritis (12 days). She was thirty years of age.

Her father was William McCrae a journeyman blacksmith. William was born c.1829.and died in Whiteface on 13 March 1864 aged 35. He died of influenza though no medical person was present.

William’s father was Donald McCrae (tenant) and his was mother Ann Wymes (Weymss?). Donald was born in Fodderty, Rossshire c. 1781 - in the 1841 census he is aged 60 - a farmer crofter of 12 acres. Donald and Ann married on 08.08.1806 in the parish of Fodderty. Both were deceased at the time of William’s marriage. Donald McCrae and Ann Wymes’ marriage is recorded in the parish of Rosskeen in Ross and Cromarty on 31.12.1852. Donald and Ann had five other children Donald ,Charlotte, Duncan, & Allan McCrae (see below)

An Ann Weymss was born 24.02.1783 Strathskea, Dingwall. Father Duncan, mother Katherine nee McLennan. Is this our ancestor? She is aged 55 in the 1841 Census.

Annie McCrae’s mother was Margaret McLean (daughter of Roderick McLean and Ann Cameron). Margaret is recorded on the 1881 census (with son Duncan aged 17, a day labourer) and 1891 census (with grandson Roderick Foils aged 3) living at Whiteface in the parish of Creich. Margaret was born c.1831 and died in 1900. The address is given as Newton Point No.1.

Annie’s other siblings born to William and Margaret were:

Donald - 05.10.1855 in Creich
Roderick - 03.12.1857 in Creich.
Duncan – 08.01.1863 in Creich
Isabella - born c.1861 – she was Annie’s bridesmaid when she married our Great-grandfather John Foils.

.We also found:

Searching for Ian [titch] Mackay

I`m still looking for a long lost friend. His name is Ian [titch] Mackay. We lived in Meiklefield Road back in the 50`s and 60`s. He moved down to England somewhere round about 1967ish. We have never been in contact since then. I have posted this on here a couple of times in the last 5 years in the hope that someone who knows of his whereabouts may read this. I guess it`s a long shot. Please email me.

ROBERT MACGREGOR

My forbear, Robert MacGregor married to Isabella McLean gave his occupation as "FORRESTER" & his address as "CONANSIDE" on his son's birth reg in 1822.
Was/is there a village called Conanside and where would a forester work in that area and what would he specifically do c1820. He does not appear on the 1841 census

JOHN CAMERCON DINGWALL

I had a grandfather I never met, John Cameron Dingwall, born on or about 1908. He was married to Margaret Crowe, (lived in PA) but left her during the depression in 1933 to look for work. Besides my dad and my aunt, I heard he had a son and daughter from his second marriage. Also heard he may have moved to Connecticut. If you knew him, would love to hear from you.

Looking for my cousin

My cousin John Green lived at 8 Woodlands Road, Dingwall. I have not heard from him since 2007. He always rang me on New Years Day but I have had no word from him since. I know he and his wife Irene (nee Riley) spent the winters in Fuengirola Spain then returned to Dingwall in the Spring. They have two sons Paul who I believe lives in Dingwall and Colin who lives in the far north of Scotland. I do not have an address for either of them. I am very anxious to trace John and Irene, we were very close and it is most unsual not to have heard from them. If anyone can help me I would be very grateful.

William Ross

From a conversation many years ago I understand that my great great grandfather was William Ross of which I am lead to believe the Hospital is named after? I had the opportunity in 2003 to visit Dingwall and the Hospital as I was told by my grandmother of a picture of him that was in the Hopital. Unfortunately it was no longer there however some of the staff did remember it and was directed to the Town Hall/Museum which was a great experience but no further light shed on the photo however was told William Ross also was on the council in the late 1800's, I would love to know more of him, possibly locate the photo and any other information about him.Regards Mark Fraser, Australia

Conon-Side

Hello
I am trying to find the location of Conon-Side.
My family all originally came from the Black Isle and I have been doing research into the place names of the area that various ancestors of mine lived. The placenames that I found included Craighouse, Mulchaich, Bog of Findon, Smithfield. However the one that eludes me is Conon-Side. This was where my great, great, great grandfather lived in the early part of the nineteenth century. His name was Thomas Mackenzie and he was a miller at Conon-Side. He married Barbara Clark of Bog of Findon in 1819 and I think they would live there until his retirement. I have searched on Google and whilst the name comes up quite a few time it is difficult to find the geographical location. I know it is close to Conon Bridge and Dingwall and I am assuming it is by the river Conon. As he was a miller it would make sense that his mill would be on a river or a stream.
Does anyone know the exact location of this place ?

Thankyou...........Jim Mackenzie

Urquharts Restaurant

Hi everyone,
This may be a bit of a long shot, but I hope someone can help.
My Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather came to Dingwall in April 1921 to get married, they were both born, lived and died in Stornoway and I can't trace any family to Dingwall. They married on 21/04/1921, their names were John MacLeod and Isabella Murray, they married at Urqhuarts Restaraunt and one witness was Nellie Urqhuart. Iam looking for anyone who may have some more information or even old photographs which might possibly contain my Great Grandparents. My great grandmother has been somewhat elusive to trace as she died when my Grandfather was very young, and with him now gone also it has been hard to get information on her.
I would love any help or information anyone could offer.
Many thanks

Family History: Matheson, Peddie or Dargo

My granny Ina Matheson Dargo (m.s. Peddie) with her family used to visit and stay with a blind woman called Aunty Bab's in the Muir of Ord and Dingwall area during the 1930 - 1950's. I have photos of this Aunty Babs with an Ina and Bob Scott. I have been told that Ina and Bob Scott had two sons and were called Ian and Duncan although this cannot be confirmed. I also have knowledge of a child called Shirley who would be about 60-70years+ of age now, possibly the daughter of the Scotts or some relation. There are also other photos of a woman named Joy.
My granny's mother was Hectorina Peddie (m.s. Dargo) who married Peter Peddie.
Can you help fill the gaps?
Can you fill the gaps or inform someone who may fit the descriptions?
